Over the Easter weekend crews across the Isle of Wight were called to several mud rescue incidents due to members of the public being unaware of the dangers of the terrain they were venturing into.
We are often called to support our RNLI and Coastguard partners in rescuing members of the public who have become stuck in mud near to our coastline or rivers.
An incident yesterday afternoon saw a teenager rescued from the shore in St Helens, following on from similar callouts across the Island to Seaview and Freshwater.
Portsmouth crews were also called to a casualty stuck in mud in Gosport earlier this month.
Ryde Station Manager Chris Thearle said:
“The recent weather has contributed to extremely muddy conditions across our areas.
“Over the Easter holiday weekend we have been a part of several multi-agency responses to incidents where members of the public have got stuck in the mud whilst out walking alongside the shore.
“We urge people to take caution, be aware of the terrain they are walking upon and ensure they have the what3words app available so if required our crews are provided with an accurate location.”
We ask that before you venture out, make sure that you are aware of our guidance on how to stay safe:
- Always follow local warning signs
- Don’t go out alone into unknown areas
- Be aware of tide times and currents
- Take a mobile phone with you
- Stay on footpaths and keep dogs under control
- If you come across someone stuck in mud – call 999 – don’t enter the mud to help them
If you do find yourself in danger:
- Try to stay calm and avoid movement
- Spread your weight to stand evenly
- Call loudly to attract attention
- Call 999
- And discourage others from attempting to rescue you
