The group of five from HIWFRS joined up with their UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) colleagues and following a formal request from Morocco into the government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the team were deployed on Sunday 10th September.

The 60-strong contingent, along with four rescue dogs, from 14 UK fire services were based in Amizmiz at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, providing search and rescue for many mountain villages and towns.

The team worked relentlessly to access remote areas cut off by road in difficult circumstances. Working closely with colleagues from Spain and Qatar, as well as Moroccan Civil Protection and military.

Footage and images from their deployment revealed the devastating affects the earthquake had had on the buildings and roads in the country.

Station Manager Simon Forster said:

“We are extremely proud of the role we were able to play in UK-ISAR’s response to Morocco.

“Being out there was an experience we will never forget and our hearts continue to go out to all those who have been affected.

“We spoke to villagers that have shared distressing stories of loss but are so thankful and appreciative of our support. As we drove around the towns and villages, people rushed out to clap and wave, thanking us for helping which is very humbling.

“As with all our overseas deployments we are thankful for the support shown by our colleagues in Hampshire and Isle of Wight.”
