A minute’s silence was held this morning (May 3) to remember the firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of the duty.
About 100 people from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service headquarters attended the event ahead of Firefighters Memorial Day.
The day will be marked on stations throughout the country tomorrow with crews parading in fire kit and a minute’s silence at midday.
HFRS Assistant Chief Fire Officer Stew Adamson will be laying a wreath at Holy Sepulchre in London on Sunday (May 5).
The day aims to acknowledge the courage and dedication of generations of firefighters including those who serve communities today.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer and trustee of The Firefighters Memorial Trust Steve Apter said:
“This is hugely important day.
“It is a day when we recognise the incredible contribution firefighters make throughout our communities.
“It is a day when we think about those who put themselves in danger to keep others safe – and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for others.”
This is the second year this event is being held.
May 4 is also International Firefighters’ Day – and in some countries is celebrated as St Florian’s Day which commemorates the dedication and sacrifices of firefighters across the world.
