Southsea firefighters joined together to give older residents a day to remember.

Crews took part in the extraordinary afternoon of food and entertainment – making this the 40th show the city’s firefighters have put on. Portsmouth’s residents have had to wait two years to reach the landmark figure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s showcase, held at Portsmouth Guildhall, included dancing firefighters, an Irish band, and Chinese dancers, along with some poetry and singers.

Crew Manager Beth Medway, from Southsea Fire Station, said:

“It’s incredible that this is the 40th show Southsea firefighters have put on for our senior citizens.

“A lot of effort has gone into organising this year’s event, which we have all missed over the past two years.

“I think this event showcases the ways in which firefighters help the community that not everyone is aware of.

“Everyone had a fantastic time.”

The show included a presentation to some of the event’s long-standing volunteers.

Jack Frost and Pete and Jackie Kavanagh have helped with every show since the start, alongside former station manager Steve Thomas, who has also been involved for many years.

Vinnie Nicoll and Jasper Taylor were also honoured for their efforts, with special mentions for chief washer-upper, Jack Williams, and long-time station supporter Ann.
