Why has a new station been built at Basingstoke? 

Basingstoke is one of Hampshire’s most important strategic stations due to its excellent north-south and east-west road links. The station was built in the 1960s and the building has served the Service well. However, annual upkeep costs were running into thousands of pounds and the station lacked the facilities required by a modern fire service.

  1. Recent incidentBlaze sweeps through Bitterne gardens21/05/2018A large fire in the open has destroyed sheds, fences and scrub. The blaze broke out at 12:33 in Hillside Avenue, Bitterne Park, and caused a huge smoke plume. Three engines from St Mary's and Hightown attended with a specialist vehicle from Eastleigh. Four jets, two hose reels and two sets of breathing apparatus were used. The stop message was at 14:46.
  2. Recent incidentTwo men in hospital after severe van fire13/05/2018Two men were taken to hospital with severe burns following a van fire in Hamble. The vehicle was reported on fire on Westfield Common just before 7.15pm. Crews from Hamble, Hightown and St Mary’s used breathing apparatus and hoses to extinguish the flames. The two men, believed to be in their 20s, were taken to hospital by road and air ambulance. The van was severely damaged by the fire and one car also damaged by the heat of the flames. Recent incidentCats rescued and 11 people led to safety in Bitterne flat fire29/04/2018Several cats were saved and 11 people led to safety after fire broke out in a ground-floor flat in Bitterne. The people living in the four-storey block were led to safety by crews after smoke had filled the stairwell. The resident of the affected flat, a 71-year-old woman, was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation but was not seriously injured.   4. Recent incidentWoman suffers burn after plastic left on cooker28/04/2018A 63-year-old woman was treated for a burn to her hand after plastic was left on top of a cooker hob. Two crews from Eastleigh attended the 999 call reporting a fire in the kitchen of the North Baddesley flat. The fire was already out by the time the crews had arrived but they provided first aid for the woman’s burn and thankfully she did not need hospital treatment.
  5. Historical incidentMan treated following Chandler's Ford flat fire23/04/2018A man was treated for smoke inhalation after fire broke out on the first floor of a block of flats in Chandler's Ford. The man escaped the building on Bodycoats Road before firefighters arrived and was thankfully he was not seriously injured. The fire started in the lounge of a flat on the first floor and crews from Eastleigh, Service Headquarters and St Mary's used hose reels and jets to extinguish the flames.   6. Historical incidentSnake called Anna Cornder captured in Portsmouth loft20/04/2018An escaped 5ft corn snake has been captured by an HFRS animal rescue expert. The pet reptile is 11 years old and was trapped in a fascia board in a house in Alver Road, Fratton, Portsmouth. It was released from this by HFRS and captured in the roof space. The snake was unharmed, checked by the RSPCA and then retuned to its owner. The stop message was at 17:04.
  7. Historical incidentLarge horse rescued from Alresford well20/04/2018Firefighters were called out to rescue an Irish Draught gelding from a well. Crews from Alresford, Overton and Winchester attended the incident in which the large male horse had got its hind legs trapped. Crews used small tools, animal rescue equipment and a Manitou telehandler. The horse was 20 years old and measured 16.3 hands (1.65 metres).   8. Historical incidentFirefighter administers jam sandwiches05/04/2018An on-call firefighter administered jam sandwiches to a diabetic having a 'hypo'. The co-responder from Alresford helped monitor the pensioner's condition and worked with our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS). The incident took place in Itchen Stoke. We left the scene at 18:06.
  9. Historical incidentFire on Pizza bus a day after it opens04/04/2018Two crews from Hythe and Hardley attended a fire in Tesco car park in Sizer Way. A fire had broken out in a traditional wood-burning pizza oven on a double decker bus that had been refitted as a mobile restaurant. The fire spread to the rest of the bus. Two sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reels and tactical ventilation were used. The stop message was at 07:03. The fire started the day after the business was launched.
  10. Historical incidentDog rescued after Shirley frying pan blaze03/04/2018Crews from Redbridge and St Mary's rescued a dog from a kitchen fire in Vaudrey Close, Shirley, Southampton. The fire was started by oil in a pan. Two sets of breathing apparatus were used along with one jet. The stop message was at 13:29. The rescued dog was believed to be a 10-year-old Shih Tzu cross-breed.
  11. Historical incidentCrews tackle bin chute fire at Portsmouth high-rise block01/04/2018Crews from Southsea, Cosham, Portchester, Fareham and Havant attended a fire at Barkis House, Portsmouth. The fire was in the third floor external bin chute. Crews used four sets of breathing apparatus, one jet, one hose reel and one positive pressure ventilation for smoke clearance. No one was injured during the incident. The stop came in at 13:58.
  12. Historical incidentCrews rescue man and his dogs from kitchen fire in Southampton 30/03/2018Hightown and Redbridge crews tackled a kitchen fire in a mid-terraced property on Nursery Road. A 63 year old male was rescued by crews and taken to Southampton General by South Central Ambulance Service, for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Two dogs were rescued from the property. One dog was resuscitated by crews at the scene. Both dogs are now in the care of a local vet and being treated for smoke inhalation. Historical incidentFire on the dance floor in Portsmouth nightclub28/03/2018Vehicles from Southsea, St Mary’s, Portchester and Cosham, including the Aerial Ladder Platform, were called to a fire on the dance floor at a nightclub on Guildhall Walk in Portsmouth. Everyone was safely evacuated from the premises after the fire involving ducting was discovered. The blaze on the second floor of the three-storey building resulted in smoke logging throughout the nightclub.   14. Historical incidentFire crews rescue two cats in Portswood kitchen fire26/03/2018Three crews from St Mary's and Hightown attended a flat fire in which the kitchen was destroyed. Other parts of the home were badly damaged by smoke. The fire broke out in Portswood Road, Portswood. Two cats were rescued by crews and given oxygen before being handed on to vets. Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus, a hose reel, a jet, an ultra high pressure lance and tactical ventilation to tackle the blaze. The stop message was at 11:22.
