Why has a new station been built at Basingstoke?

Basingstoke is one of Hampshire’s most important strategic stations due to its excellent north-south and east-west road links. The station was built in the 1960s and the building has served the Service well. However, annual upkeep costs were running into thousands of pounds and the station lacked the facilities required by a modern fire service.
