Portsmouth firefighter Jake Orr is swapping hose running for Strongman as he competes for a UK’s strongest man title.
Jake joined HIWFRS in 2019 and has now used his firefighting fitness and strength to qualify for the Natural Strongman UK and Ireland’s Strongest Man u90kg competition, with invitations extended only to athletes who have qualified through the national pathway.
Also known as Jake Velocity, Jake is now preparing to take part in the drug-tested competition which serves as a direct, sanctioned qualifier for international championships.
Firefighter Jake Orr said:
“I’m excited to be taking part in this elite event, where I will be up against some really tough competitors.
“I’ve had to work incredibly hard to qualify for this competition, but I know it will be a fantastic experience and well worth the long hours spent in the gym.
“To be a firefighter you need to be strong and resilient, and this led me towards discovering this passion, in which I also coach other individuals to reach their fitness related goals.
“My crew back on station have been really supportive and encouraging, helping me prepare and train to get to where I am today, they fully understand the focus and the drive that I have applied to this for the last few years.
“I am expecting this to be my toughest step up so far, and won’t be leaving anything out on the competition floor.”
On Saturday 11th April, Jake will take to the floor at The Hangar in Wolverhampton, competing in a number of different events.

Jake’s Cosham blue watch crew mates have got behind him to show their support:
“Wishing you the very best of luck, Jake.
“We’re all confident you’ll perform exceptionally well in the competition.
“Everyone at Blue Watch is behind you.
“Go out there, give it your all, and bring home the gold.”
