Cycling and pedestrian safety

Cycling is a popular mode of transport as its quick, safe and inexpensive. However, it does come with its own unique risks and every year more than 100 cyclists die on UK roads.

Here’s our advice on how to remain safe when out cycling.  

• Be seen – make sure you are wearing some reflective clothing. Always ensure you have good working lights on your bike. The lights are designed to help others see you.  
• Helmets – Always wear your helmet. Falling off your bike can result in sustaining serious head injuries. Having a helmet on will massively reduce the risk of sustaining a head injury and could well save your life.  
• Right of way – you have as much right as anyone else to cycle your bike on the road. However, whenever possible it’s best to use cycle lanes to keep you and others safe.  

Around 400 pedestrians are killed on British roads every year (www.statista.com) so it’s useful to remember the basic road safety rules for pedestrians.

• Always cross at a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights wherever possible.
• If there is no footpath, walk on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic and try and keep as close as possible to the side of the road.
• Wear reflective clothing when walking or running at night.
