Last weekend saw our newest batch of Volunteer Fire Cadet Instructors from across several of our Fire Cadet units successfully complete their drill yard supervision course.
The two-day intensive training course teaches the new recruits the basics of firefighting, how to use the equipment safely, how to teach that to the cadets and the common mistakes that young people will make when handling the equipment.
The training course for the new recruits was run by Fire Cadet Lead Alex Hamilton, with support from firefighters who are already part of the Fire cadet team. Over the two days, the group took part in drill yard training with ladders, ropes and hose reels as well as building on their teamwork skills and confidence using firefighting equipment.
Fire Cadet Lead Alex Hamilton said:
“All the new instructors did a fantastic job over the two-day course so they should be very proud. They are now all ready to lead and inspire our young fire cadets, equipped with the knowledge and training to support them in learning their drills and much more.”
The new recruits also gave some great feedback on the training:
“The existing instructors were incredibly approachable and helpful. Their knowledge was very good and they made everyone feel comfortable.”
“Instructors were considerate of how they approached teaching & made sure everyone understood before moving on.”
“The instructors were helpful in answering questions with no judgement. I found the training taught at a great level, very knowledgeable.”
