Pensioner dies in Portsmouth flat fire

Crews were called to a ground floor flat on fire and found a 70-year-old man dead

A 70-year-old man has died in a flat fire in Portsmouth.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the incident at 00:15 on Wednesday, September 18.

The incident was at a property in Hale Court, Fratton Road.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was treated by South Central Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

Southsea, Cosham and Portchester crews and Hampshire Constabulary attended the ground floor flat fire.

Four sets of breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and tactical ventilation were used.

A joint police and fire investigation is underway to establish the cause.
