Over 50 people evacuated after garage fire in Aldershot
More than 60 firefighters and 14 fire engines from Hampshire, Royal Berkshire and Surrey fire and rescue services were called to a commercial garage fire on Elms Road, Aldershot early this morning (4 February). On arrival, crews were faced with flames and thick smoke as tyres and cars were involved in the blaze within the two-storey workshop. A turntable ladder and two aerial ladder platforms were mobilised for firefighting. Residents of neighbouring properties were evacuated by fire personnel and Hampshire Constabulary. They were taken to a relief centre at Princes Hall arranged by Rushmoor Borough Council and the British Red Cross. Multiple road closures were put in place whilst numerous agencies worked in the area. Members of the public were advised to stay away from the area, close all doors and windows, and to avoid going outdoors. By midday the fire was brought under control with relief operations being put in place. Two casualties ? a 66-year-old male and a 96-year-old female ? were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation by South Central Ambulance Service. Flats behind the industrial estate have suffered devastation and extensive roof damage. As a result, those residents will be rehomed.
