Isle of Wight firefighters tackle flat fire on Ryde High Street

Isle of Wight crews were called to a flat fire on the High Street in Ryde at 19:14 last night (29 Dec).

Crews from Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Newport, Cowes and Ventnor were sent to the scene where the first-floor flat, above a shop, was well alight.

The fire was extinguished using six sets of breathing apparatus, one hose reel, one main jet and one safety jet before crews began cutting away floorboards to check for fire spread.

Fire investigation officers are liaising with police colleagues regarding an investigation.

The stop message came in at 21:18 before the scene was handed over to the police.
