Island crews called to house fire in East Cowes

Firefighters from East Cowes and Newport were called to a property fire on Osborne Heights at 15:20 yesterday afternoon.

Smoke was issuing from the house upon arrival, with the fire in the ground-floor lounge.

Four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and one safety jet were used to tackle the fire, with ventilation fans in operation to clear smoke.

Sadly a dog died in the fire.

HIWFRS left the scene following the stop message at 17:12.

Community Safety Watch Manager, Aidy Wellock said:

“We cannot stress enough how vital having working smoke alarms in the home is and the difference it can make if a fire occurs. Smoke alarms provide an early warning of incidents and provide precious time to escape.

“Adequate working smoke detection should be fitted on every level of your home and should be tested regularly.

“We offer additional support to fit smoke alarms for those who are most vulnerable to fire via our Safe and Well visits.”
