Domestic fire – Oakley

A 66 year old woman is in hospital after a fire at her home in Oakley. The alarm was raised at 22:57 yesterday evening (Tuesday 05 July) after neighbours saw smoke and flames in the window of the property on Lightsfield, Oakley. The first crews were on scene within six minutes and on gaining entry found the woman unconscious in the hallway.Firefighters then carried out resuscitation before handing her over to the care of South Central Ambulance Service. They then transported her to Southampton General Hospital. We were alerted to the incident thanks to the quick-thinking of neighbours, who spotted smoke coming from the first floor bedroom window and called us immediately.Fire investigators have been at the scene today and have determined that the cause of the fire was a fault with an electrical item in the bedroom. We?d like to remind others of the importance of unplugging electrical items, not to overload sockets, keeping to one plug per socket and always ensuring you use the correct fuse. Safeguard your electrical appliances by checking for signs of hot plugs and sockets, scorch marks, loose wiring and flickering lights. If you have any concerns with an electrical item then turn the appliance off and consult a qualified electrician. Our thoughts are with the resident. Crews are in the area this evening delivering safety messages in the neighbouring community. All fires highlight the importance of having a working smoke detector on every level of your home and testing them regularly. We urge you to check your own smoke detectors and those of elderly relatives and neighbours for a safer community. For more information on how to keep your home safe and to register for a Safe & Well home safety visit if you?re 65 and over please visit www.hantsfire.gov.uk.Three pumps from Basingstoke attended the incident and the stop message was received at 00:03.
