Cat dies in severe Basingstoke flat fire

A cat died after a flat was gutted by fire in Basingstoke. No people were injured in the blaze but seven people had to be rehoused after the blaze at the four-flat block on Cayman Close.Smoke was reported coming from the first-floor property just before 8pm. Around 20 firefighters from Basingstoke, Odiham and Tadley fought hard to contain the flames, which had spread to the roof, and prevent any significant damage to the other flats. While the flat the fire started in was destroyed, the other flats suffered only water and smoke damage. However, all the block?s residents were rehoused due to a loss of power in the block. The cat belonged to the owners of the fire-gutted flat, who were out at the time the blaze broke out. A joint fire investigation with the police will now be carried out to determine the cause of the incident.
