Fire Safety Inspectors from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) have supported Hampshire landlords by hosting a free fire safety workshop.

The workshop held for members of the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) took place on Wednesday 19 June at Southsea Fire Station. Inspectors and Managers from the Fire Service’s East Hub Protection team delivered a workshop to 20 NRLA members who were keen to understand their fire safety obligations.

The workshops have been organised to help educate landlords about their legal duties and responsibilities around fire safety as the Responsible Persons (RPs) for residential properties.

HIWFRS’ Station Manager for Protection Delivery in the East hub Rich O’Brien said:

“Fire safety in residential properties such as flats, HMO’s bedsits and shared houses is a challenge to regulate both for the Fire and Rescue Service and Private Sector Housing.

“This partnership event allowed us to deliver important fire safety advice straight to the responsible person about the importance of maintaining a fire alarm system, having a clear evacuation strategy and providing a suitable means of escape.”

Following the positive feedback from the event HIWFRS now plan to host several other fire safety events for landlords across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in future. Those interested in future workshops can contact csprotection.admin@hantsfire.gov.uk.

Each year HIWFRS handles around 4,000 interactions with businesses of all kinds and sizes, supporting them through a combination of consultations, formal inspections and other educational initiatives such as free monthly webinars on the topic of business safety.
