Occupation: Retired firefighter
What is your role as a HIWFRS volunteer?
“I visit people in their homes to fit smoke alarms and give people fire safety advice. Known as Safe and Well visits I’m able to walk a person through their home and point out any fire issues they may not have thought about, such as blocked escape routes or locked doors with no accessible keys nearby. By giving advice I aim to make people safer in their homes for longer.”
Why did you decide to volunteer for the fire service?
“I fell into the role by chance and really thought I could make a difference speaking to people face to face in their homes giving advice and sharing my past experiences.”
What difference do you feel your time volunteering makes?
“I believe my time spent on Safe and Well visits makes people think about their safety in their own home. Quite often a resident says “thank you, I didn’t think of that” and then I know I’ve made a difference and made that resident safer than they were.
What do you get out of volunteering?
“I enjoy it. I look forward to my volunteering hours in the week. I enjoy meeting the community in their own home and having the time to chat with them and improve their safety.”
