Judy is the Education Manager with our Children and Young People Team and joined HFRS in 2006 after having worked in secondary education for 8 years; bringing with her a passion for making a difference and providing positive engagement with Children and Young People.
The Schools Education Team was founded in 1996 and over the years the team has adapted through many changes. Today the team comprises 5 Education Officers and a FireWise Practitioner. The education programme is offered to all key stages throughout schools in Hampshire, delivering key safety messages and ensuring Children and Young People are well equipped to stay safe in potentially dangerous situations. The education programme had an overhaul in 2019 and was launched into schools around Hampshire, the feedback the team has received from schools has been extremely positive throughout.
“Teaching Fire Safety is very different to other learning, so we have to ensure we get this right. The programme has been specially written making sure all messages are age appropriate and clear ensuring we do not scare children or give them an unhealthy interest in fires. Within our team we have a specialist practitioner who works 1:1 with young people who have set fires to help them understand their feelings and the dangers of their actions. We do not use shock tactics in any of our engagement as studies show this does not work.”
“I am very lucky to be involved with the important work we do as an Education team. I love it now as much as I did when I first joined the service as an Education officer in 2006.”
