Being a firefighter means your fitness levels must be at their absolute best to be able to manoeuvre equipment on the fire ground or carry a casualty out of a burning building.
During the application process, there are several tests you must pass. An element of these is the fitness tests. To ensure you have the best chance at being able to pass, we have created a series of videos and guides to help you along the way.
There are five videos in total which feature real Hampshire firefighters demonstrating the exercises correctly. Make sure you have medical clearance to undertake training before attempting these exercises.
There is also a downloadable Fitness Advice PDF (below) which you can take with you to the gym. This document details further information about the level you must reach to realistically be able to pass the tests, and also some suggested programmes.
The Strength test is an element of the firefighter recruitment course that must be passed to proceed. This video simulates what the test can look like and the levels you must be able to reach to realistically be able to pass.
The videos in phase one and phase two show suggested circuits and programmes to prepare for the strength test and increase your fitness.
Phase one: Circuit one is a training routine to assist potential recruits in preparation for the strength test. A way to fit these circuits into your training routine can be found in the downloadable Fitness Advice PDF above.
Phase two: Circuit one and Circuit two are training routines to assist potential recruits in preparation for the strength test. You should be able to complete the Phase one circuit fairly easily before moving on to these circuits. A way to fit these circuits into your training routine can be found in the downloadable Fitness Advice PDF above.
The Chester treadmill walk test must be passed to proceed in the firefighter recruitment process. This video acts as a training guide to give potential recruits an idea of how the test works and help them prepare for it.
