Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service encourages positive role models in Hampshire...

15.07.2010

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have been working in partnership with Hampshire Constabulary and Environmental Services within Havant Borough Council and ASDA to engage with local senior schools.

The aim was to encourage year 10 students (age 14/15) to do their best by getting involved in team, the community, life skills activities, breaking down the discrimination barriers and to heighten the aspirations of young people within our communities.  This activity helps towards reducing the occurrences of secondary fires through alcohol misuse and other anti-social behaviour within Havant.

The project team identified three schools within the Havant area and six students from each school took part in this project.  The three schools are Cowplain Community School, Park Community School and Staunton Community Sports College.  It was agreed by all agencies and the schools involved to run a twelve week after school course.

The ‘Positive Role Model’ project commenced on 27th April 2010 and ran for twelve weeks concluding with a pass out ceremony on Tuesday 13th July 2010.

The course involved students who were performing at all stages of the spectrum.  All services have participated in community activities such as fire safety, litter picks, crime prevention and intervention as well as active participation in sporting events.

Group Manager Ian Gray said,

“A very successful 12 week course, the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience working along side Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, Hampshire Constabulary and Havant Council. One of the students approached me and said, I quote " I would have paid to do the course" that is how much he enjoyed it.”

Sergeant Amanda Crouch, Hampshire Police said,

"The scheme has demonstrated multi agency working at its best.  All the young adults that took part engaged fully and helped to make it a success. The police, fire service, teachers and parents all believe that the young adults have benefited from the experience, and some have now decided that their chosen career path is with the police or fire service."

The programme of events were.

At the start of the course all the students received a "participants attendance log".  This was divided into four sections that was completed on a weekly basis with comments from mentors, participants, teachers and parents.

This has proved a success and has received massive support from parents and teachers monitoring their child’s attitude, thoughts and full participation in all the planned activities.
