The Prince's Trust...

| Week | Activity | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Induction | The group gets to know each other, begins developing trust, establishing boundaries and ground riles. Team members select skill areas and prepare personal action plans, focusing on qualifications and awards that can be attained. Under the leader's guidance the team agrees its collective objectives and establishes a team contract to set behaviourial norms for the course. The team carries out a series of team-building games and problem-solving exercises designed to bring them together to work in close co-operation. |
| 2 | Outdoor activity week | The team continues their team-building exercises at a residential course provided by an outdoor adventure training centre. Team-building and problem-solving exercises help to establish the importance of supporting each other through difficult times and learning to communicate and work together. The builds confidence, team spirit and a sense of responsibility to others. |
| 3-5 | Community project | Community projects form the key to team development, both to team-working as an individual skill area and the team's contribution to the community. the team will now have bonded and will begin to identify, plan and resource a local community project in identified areas, eg renovating a play area for a school. They negotiate the project with the recipients, raise the money and materials by a variety of means and undertake work needed prior to handing the completed task over. |
| 6-9 | Skills/individual placements/next steps | The team members complete individual two week work placements and receive support in the following areas to assist with their development post programme. They include: career choices, job search strategies, responding to job adverts, CV writing and interview techniques. The emphasis is on devising an exit strategy for the young person. This might be employment, education, further training or to be sign-posted in another area of the Trust, eg business, Get in to etc. We understand that some people may not be job-ready and we will work on various projects with them during this period of time. |
| 10-11 | Team challenge | The team challenge is the penultimate test of the team's ability to put into practice all the skills and experience they have developed individually and collectively over the previous 9 weeks of the programme. The team must plan, fundraise and carry out a challenge that is a test of their abilities as a team, in a situation which is both physically and mentally demanding and usually involves caring for others. |
| 12 | Review/final presentation | To review the team and personal progress on the programme and to look ahead with purpose. A final presentation in a suitable location is prepared, rehearsed and delivered to an invited audience of peers, families and local dignitaries. This is a celebration and demonstrates to their family, friends and the community that they have successfully completed the programme. This is a big day for all involved and truly demonstrates the skills and confidence that they have acquired. |
During the programme each young person works towards a City and Guilds personal, teamwork and community skills qualification. In addition, teams may receive awareness workshops in fire safety, first aid, manual handling, health and safety, food hygiene, drugs and alcohol, sexual health and equal opportunities.
We aim to work with all agencies who have access to our target group. These include employment services, probation services, YOT, youth workers, drugs services, Connexions South-Central etc. In many cases the progress of team members is dependent on establishing and maintaining close relations with those who know our clients well and maintain contact with them outside programme hours.
Understanding the issues and backgrounds of young people participating in the programme helps us to develop strategies for each person to ensure they obtain maximum benefit from the programme.
Referral is easy, just email contact details or telephone to arrange an informal interview.
All programmes are advertised in local media and are recruited a month prior to team start date. Please refer to contact details.
The programme is delivered and managed by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service as part of its Fire and Rescue Service Plan designed to make Hampshire safer. We also have strong working partnerships with Hampshire Constabulary on crime prevention, Southampton Football Club, Southern Water, Connexions South-Central, Millennium Volunteers, Exxonmobil and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
Funding is provided by the Learning and Skills Council via Milton Keynes College. The programme is completely free to all unemployed young people and they can continue to claim benefits whilst participating on the programme. We also contribute towards travel expenses for those who are unemployed.
