Portable Heaters
Portable heaters are a convenient way of providing heating solutions for many homes throughout the UK. Simple to use, they will provide good service. However, as a source of heat they can become a danger if not used and maintained correctly.
By following our guidance you will be able to use your heating appliance safely and sensibly.
- Always position heaters so the back is against a wall and they are facing into the room.
- Switch heaters off if you are not in the room and before going to bed at night.
- Always unplug electric heaters when you go out and go to bed.
- Ensure a permanent safety guard is fitted.
- Cylinders for portable gas heaters should be stored and changed outside, or in a well ventilated area.
- Both gas and paraffin heaters should only be used in a well ventilated area.
- Always follow the manufacturers' operating and maintenance instructions.
- Do not use flammable materials, aerosols or cleaning fluids near heaters.
- Do not leave children or pets unattended if portable heaters are switched on.
- Do not place heaters close to furniture, curtains or bedding.
- Do not stand or sit too close to heaters, some clothes may ignite easily.
- Do not place heaters on uneven surfaces or where they can be knocked over easily.
Never move a heater while it’s alight or switched on.
- Never place heaters near curtains or furnishings
- Never dry clothes on heaters.
