The Service
Specialist Response Week

Who should attend? This day is primarily for rescue personnel who are likely to attend trench rescue events.
PPE requirement: Delegates should provide PPE as provided by their fire and rescue service which affords head, foot, hand and eye protection and is suitable for operation within a trench environment or PPE to an equivalent standard.
Trench rescue is potentially an extremely hazardous environment for fire and rescue personnel therefore some services have identified and trained specific personnel for this task.
The Fire Service College (FSC) now offers trench rescue as one of its bookable courses and individual fire and rescue services have invested in trench training rigs.
Experience of trench rescues in the real world is rare but this one day workshop will seek to tap into the experience that exists, identify potential training facilities and regimes and call upon individuals with specialist knowledge of this area to share their ideas.
The day will get underway with input from a health and safety consultant from industry on the legislative aspects of responding to trench incidents. Representatives of the Fire Service College will cover the existing syllabus and future plans for their trench rescue courses as well as be available to assist with the practical element of the day.
Solent University is providing a soil engineer who will cover the scientific principles and dynamics of a trench and the likely results of rescue actions which may be taken.
The practical section of the workshop will involve working with a live trench to observe the use of differing shoring techniques and to give the opportunity to practice some of the techniques discussed.
Manufacturers of trench rescue equipment have been invited to provide kit to be used and assessed by the practitioners attending the day.
