We are working to reduce our 'carbon footprint' and, to help us achieve this, we audit the vehicle fleet with a view to reducing the carbon emissions produced.

Where possible, existing vehicles are already being replaced with smaller, more fuel-efficient models which produce lower carbon emissions.

We are actively trying to purchase vehicles that will comply with even stricter exhaust emission regulations (Euro 5), which are not due to be enforced until 2010.

The first 'Euro 4' fire appliances will be delivered in January 2008 and the first 'Euro 5' compliant vehicle has been ordered to replace the aerial appliance for Southsea Fire Station.

All bulk stocks of diesel on HFRS sites are replenished with bio-blend diesel. Every three months, HFRS receives a carbon saving certificate from the fuel supplier, indicating savings made according to fuel supplied.
