Hantsfire's content is managed by a web publishing system (content management system). This system not only reduces the effort necessary to develop and maintain Hantsfire, it also has other benefits which will assist Hantsfire to provide not only a consistent look and feel, but also more timely and accurate information:
- Specialist software or skills will not be required - web content can be updated from anywhere at any time through a web browser.
- Accessibility - to ensure that Hantsfire meets best practice standards for accessibility, particularly by people with visual impairment, Hantsfire's pages are created using templates which govern layout and standards to ensure consistency and accessibility throughout the site is maintained.
- Quality management - content will be more timely and dynamic and the quality of information will improve.
- Timeliness of information - web pages can be written in advance and published according to specific criteria. For example, news stories can be published on a specific date and mailed directly to people who have registered an interest in the specific subject. A web page can also be set to expire and be automatically removed when it becomes out of date.
- Easy creation of specialist areas - specialist content for specific groups (eg older people, children) requires a slightly different look and feel from the main site, but we often have to use the same content that's already presented. The Web Publishing System will allow HFRS to take consistent content and present it with different images according to the context.
- Templates for specific purposes - site administrators will be able to produce templates which allow staff to produce content of a consistently high quality for defined purposes.
- Collaborative working - HFRS will be able to make the same content available with different branding allowing us to share information with other authorities, voluntary and community organisations.
- New channels - as new channels become accepted (mobile phones, personal digital assistants or digital television), existing content can be selected and represented in a form suitable for the medium.
- Personalisation - allowing visitors to Hantsfire to register an interest in specific areas and define what information they are interested in.
