Equality champions
The Equality Champions at Service Management Team (SMT) level will work in conjunction with the Equality Manager and the Equality Team to:
- Be the point of contact or lead voice on the key issues of the chosen equality stream and ensure that cultural competence is cascaded throughout the Service.
- Support positive actions to promote understanding and awareness of the equality stream and that the consideration of specific need is factored into our decision making processes.
- Develop own general awareness and cultural competence around the equality stream and to share and cascade this awareness to others within the Service. Cultural competence can be developed through reading material, attendance at conferences and supporting network meetings. Competence can be shared through input to the development and design of in house training and awareness sessions and other communication mechanisms.
- Keep up to date with developments on the equality stream through taking an interest in and giving support to local community events and initiatives offered by stations or centrally.
- Support in house seminars and fairness and dignity forums on the chosen equality stream.
- Support the development and maintenance of local resource banks which will contain material such as information about the different strands; the specific requirements of the equality communities; information about relevant equalities legislation. The resources may be in the form of articles, reports, research, books, journals and website material.
- Support the development of local intelligence on the area of equality.
- Take an interest in the development of the External Advisory Group and ensure there is adequate representation for the equality strand.
