History of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service
Associated pages:
The HFRS heritage collection and archives are under the care of Deputy Chief Fire Officer Alan House who, as a hobby and spare time activity, acts as Archivist and custodian of the proud history of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The archives contain a variety of information related to the development of the fire and rescue service in general and Hampshire in particular.
Alan is very willing to receive research enquiries and makes every attempt to assist researchers on the basis that enquiries will be dealt with as time allows. Additionally, he is always keen to receive donations to the collection and archives, or the opportunity to copy photos or documents.
Members of the fire serving during World War II who served for the qualifying period were entitled to claim The Defence Medal. Many did not do so or were not aware that they could do so. The medal may still be claimed by or for those eligible recipients and the HFRS Archivist, Alan House, will be pleased to advise and assist. Proof of service will, of course, be a requirement.
A newly created network aimed at preserving the heritage of fire brigades and fire related subject is the Fire Heritage Network UK (www.fire-heritage-network.org.uk). This network was established in October 2004 and is currently working to establish itself as a source of information to researchers and those interested generally in fire service history.
