Specialist equipment is available to deal with a vast array of incidents, however small or large. Three animal rescue teams are strategically placed around the county, co-ordinated and trained by Fire Service Rural Safety Officers and backed up by firefighters from the fire station nearest to the incident. A multi-role vehicle (MRV) is the primary rescue resource and is equipped with 4 wheel drive, hiab crane and winches.

The equipment used in animal rescues

The equipment that is available on the MRV to assist with animal rescue is carried as part of the Incident Support Load and consists of the following: -

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Dry suits and lifejackets (for the protection of personnel working around water, should the incident be water related). Where crews are dealing with mud, they will still tend to wear the dry suit as it is easier to clean and disinfect post incident!)
Padded vest and gauntlets

To assist in the rescue

Mud lance (which loosens the animal by overcoming the suction effect of the mud)
Harness (to aid lifting)
Strops
Strop guide
Rescue paths

Animal restraint measures

Head collars
Head ropes
Hobbles (to immobilise the legs)
Shepherds crook
Pig boards

As the animal rescue team develops, new equipment and training aids are added to the inventory to increase our flexibility and skills.
