About Fire Control

Fire Control was opened in June 1997 at a cost of in excess of £3m. It is the central Command and Control for emergency fire calls for the whole of Hampshire, and is crewed 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year. This is achieved by four watches of eight control staff (a minimum of five on duty at all times), providing cover day and night.

Maintaining cover at other fire stations

One of the important jobs that Fire Control staff have to do is to make sure that cover is maintained at fire stations so that, when further calls are received, Control staff will make standby moves, mobilising fire engines to fire stations to ensure that they are available for subsequent incidents.

What happens if Fire Control have their own emergency?

There are numerous levels of 'fallback' arrangements so that Fire Control is always able to maintain the emergency response, including backups for power supplies and computer failures.

There is a secondary Control which Control staff can also use should they experience their own emergencies.
