Civil Protection Department

The Civil Protection Department is a recently established area of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS). It has been put in place to manage some of the rapidly emerging specialist operational capabilities now required of a modern Fire and Rescue Service (FRS).

Many of these specialist capabilities stem from the national New Dimension programme and from new legislation requiring FRS’s to have a wider range of technical rescue capability. HFRS also want to provide the best possible level of specialist emergency response utilising existing and new resources in the most effective ways.

The potential impact of these developments had been recognised several years ago by HFRS and a Group Manager’s post was established to bring all these aspects under one umbrella.

Civil Protection encompasses all New Dimension capabilities and most areas of specialist rescue including

Hampshire’s United Kingdom Fire Service Search and Rescue Team (UKFSSART) contingent, and
a voluntary section of our Urban Search and Rescue team who respond to overseas disasters such as earthquakes.

The following sections outline the various areas managed by the Civil Protecton department of HFRS.
