Your Welfare

"It's good to talk"

We provide specialist psychological counselling and welfare support through the Service’s Welfare Advisor, Community Counsellors, Placement Counsellors and our Fire Service Chaplain.

Support and counselling is offered to our staff for a variety of issues such as trauma support, post incident support, stress and anxiety management.

The Welfare Adviser, Geraldine Kennedy, is a qualified therapist and, when appropriate, provides a useful link to external agencies.

Service Order 8/8/1 provides details about the Welfare service - examples include

  • A confidential and professional service to HFRS in support of maintaining a healthy staff and reducing the number of working days lost to illness by the use of avoiding techniques and rehabilitation following absence.
  • Assisting HFRS personnel to develop coping strategies to ease or resolve difficulties whether related to the work or home environment.
  • Where appropriate and with consent and approval from an individual, to make referrals and seek support from other organisations, ie Fire Fighters Charity, Social Services, financial institutions and advisers, Relate, etc.
  • Financial problems - referrals in cases of hardship and advice about managing debt, relationship difficulties related to work, social or home life
  • Information and practical advice about drug and alcohol use
  • Liaising with Occupational Health and HR identifying any dual needs to ensure that the individual receives appropriate support.
