A Critical Event

A suitable definition may be, any event which has a stressful impact sufficient enough to overwhelm the usually effective coping skills of either an individual or group. They are typically sudden, powerful events which are outside the range of ordinary human experiences and as such can have strong emotional effect even on well trained, experienced people such as firefighters.

Critical Incident Stress

This is the reaction a person or group may experience having been subjected to the above event. It is characterised by a wide range of physical, emotional and behavioural signs and symptoms, some of which will be covered in this booklet. This may also be referred to as "post traumatic stress".
