Corporate Planning Process
Fighting fire and responding the to the increasingly varied types of special service incidents the modern fire and rescue service is called upon to attend, requires extremely specialist and sophisticated appliances and equipment.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service operates a fleet valued in excess of £2.59m. The list below summarises the principal types of appliance that we use to attend incidents. The appliances are stowed and fitted out by our dedicated workshops located in Winchester.
We have 76 of these in front line service with a further 14 held in reserve to provide for maintenance/accident repair etc. Almost all of these vehicles are based on the Volvo FL 614 chassis with more recent additions using the Volvo FLH. These vehicles provide front line fire and rescue capability with a wide range of equipment and ladders together with crew space for up to six personnel.
A county as rural as Hampshire needs an off road vehicle capability. This we achieve with the use of land rovers and other four wheel drive vehicles. At present we have 18 land rovers (all of which are fitted with pumps), 1 Steyr Puch and 3 multi role vehicles (MRV) based on an Iveco Ford chassis. These MRV's are capable of carrying a range of heavy loads (in pre-loaded format) off road.
Costing up to £450,000 each our three aerial appliances (1 turntable ladder and 2 aerial ladder platforms) are strategically sited around the county to provide the maximum coverage to the centres of high rise risk.
These 6 vehicles (4 on front line, 1 in reserve and 1 on training) provide heavy rescue equipment, breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits. They attend all major incidents and carry personnel skilled in the operation of the equipment carried.
We have six of these vehicles including 2 that can carry foam. They are sited strategically around the county where the absence of natural or piped water supplies could make firefighting operations difficult.
We have an extensive fleet of support vehicles including:
