Bag pack raises £2,762 for Haiti

26 Jan 2010

  • Bag pack as Asda to raise funds for Haiti

A joint fundraiser between Asda Chandler’s Ford and Hampshire firefighters has raised more than £2,700.

The kind hearted people of Hampshire opened their hearts and their wallets at the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal last Saturday (January, 23) when Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Urban Search and Rescue team joined forces with Asda staff to raise money through a bag pack.

All of the money will now be forwarded to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Haiti Appeal which is raising money to support the survivors of the Haiti earthquake which struck on 12 January.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service had three Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) firefighters in Haiti assisting with the search for survivors as part of a 64 strong deployment by United Kingdom International Search and Rescue.

The whole UK ISAR operation was also coordinated by a small team of USAR specialists based at the Service’s headquarters in Eastleigh.

Speaking after the fundraiser, Lesley Meade, from Asda, said:

“We would like to thank everyone who visited the store last Saturday and helped us raise so much for those affected by the Haiti earthquake. The final count shows we raised £2,762.28.

“We would especially like to thank search and rescue dogs, Byron and Shelley as they really stole the show.”

Throughout the day firefighters and Asda personnel worked side by side packing customer’s bags and raising cash.

USAR specialist, Crew Manager Daryll Pynigar, helped organise the fundraiser on behalf of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

He said:

“For an event that was put together at such short notice we are particularly pleased with the outcome and the support we received from not just Asda, but the people of Hampshire for contributing so much to this worthy cause.

“For our firefighters, their search and rescue operation in Haiti is over. But work goes on in the country to rebuild lives and communities devastated by the earthquake.”
