A cat lost one of its nine lives after being trapped in a shed that had been crushed by a large oak tree blown over in yesterday’s gusty weather conditions.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to an incident where a large oak tree had blown over in yesterday afternoon's strong winds and torrential rain (Monday 23 November 2009) in the Peverells Wood area of Chandlers Ford.
Control Operators mobilised two fire appliances from Eastleigh Fire Station and the Urban Search and Rescue team to attend the scene where it was reported that the tree had fallen onto a house and persons were possibly trapped.
Upon arrival, crews established that the tree had fallen onto a shed and conservatory at the rear of the private dwelling and the occupier had managed to escape from the shed. It transpired that during the bad weather the occupier of the house had gone out to the shed with her dog to check on a pet cat when the tree was blown over. The cat was temporarily being kept in a box in the shed whilst it was unwell. The owner and dog managed to escape from the shed prior to the arrival of crews, however the cat remained it its box trapped in the shed.
Group Manager Jason Avery advised
“Firefighters ensured that the tree was left in a stable condition. It is lucky that no-one got hurt and the outcome of this event could have been much more serious”
Firefighters managed to rescue the cat and return it safely to the owner, whilst also making the scene safe, and cordoning off the affected area. The ambulance service were also in attendance and it was confirmed that no injuries were sustained. The matter has now been passed to Eastleigh Borough Council’s tree section.
