Weather Conditions

Wet and windy weekend

16 Nov 2009

Hampshire firefighters had a busy weekend responding to a number of weather related incidents.

Over the course of 36 hours from 8 pm on Friday, November 13 to 8 am on Sunday, November 15, the Service responded to at least 20 incidents which were related to the bad weather.

Some of the incidents which HFRS responded to included:

  1. 13/11 – 20:27 – Botley Road, Shedfield – a car hit a tree which had fallen into the road, resulting in two people being taken to hospital.
  2. 14/11 – 08:49 – Green Lane, Copnor – the gable end of property had collapsed. Firefighters were in attendance to make the scene safe until the arrival of structural engineer.
  3. 14/11 – 10:18 – Quob Farm Close, West End – a large tarpaulin had come loose and blown into a tree. Firefighters attended to remove and secure tarpaulin.
  4. 14/11 – 11:00 – Marine Drive, Barton-on-Sea – a large area of asphalt roof had come loose in wind. HFRS attended to secure the roof.
  5. 14/11 – 11:23 – Hursley Road, Chandlers Ford – one marquee measuring 8m x 4m had blown free in strong winds and become stuck on the roof of a property. Firefighters removed the marquee and made scene safe.
  6. 14/11 – 12:53 – Upper Northam Road, Hedge End – Two electricity cables had fallen onto footpath. Firefighters in attendance to ensure public safety whilst awaiting Electricity Board.
  7. 14/11 – 16:14 – Forneth Gardens, Fareham – tree collapsed onto house in high winds. Firefighters in attendance to make scene safe.
  8. 15/11 – 02:31 – Beach Road, Southsea – firecrews offering assistance after property flooded.

With the Met Office predicting further wet and windy weather during the course of coming days, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is advising people to take extra care and to keep an eye on weather reports.

County residents are also urged to look after their neighbours. People have been known to suffer from hypothermia after their homes have become flooded with cold rainwater.

Bad weather can strike suddenly so the best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road, but if you must drive, make sure you are prepared for the conditions.
