Weather Warning

Residents warned ahead of forecast gales and coastal flooding

13 Nov 2009

Environment Agency, Hampshire Constabulary, and Hampshire County Council are issuing advice and guidance to residents in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for this weekend.

Gale force winds of up to 70 miles per hour are expected along the south coast of England.

For tomorrow’s high tide expected around 9 am, flood warnings are being issued by the Environment Agency for the following areas in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight:

  • Beaulieu and Calshot
  • Hythe, Marchwood, Eling and Redbridge
  • Hamble
  • Yarmouth
  • Cowes, East Cowes and Newport
  • Fareham and Portchester
  • Brockhampton, Langstone and Emsworth
  • Eastoke and South Hayling

Residents in the flood warning areas are advised to take appropriate action now to protect their property from flooding, and are encouraged to move valuables and important documents to safety and bring indoors items which may cause damage or may be damaged.

Residents are also advised to take extra care when driving. It is possible that heavy tree branches, roofing tiles and such things as unstable chimney stacks could be dislodged. In addition, because of water-logged ground, trees may be uprooted by the heavy winds.

All those venturing outdoors are advised to take extra care and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
