11 Jan 2010

Totalling more than £1 million the money will predominantly be available to assist with Urban Search and Rescue; High Volume Pumping as well as Detection, Identification and Monitoring training. The New Dimension project was introduced shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US.

It is a collaboration between Communities and Local Government (CLG) and Fire and Rescue Services with the intention of enhancing the national capability of Fire and Rescue Services to deal with major disruptive incidents.

These incidents could include Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) occurrences, collapsed or unstable structures, or the removal of large volumes of water. The Government has made over £300 million available nationwide for the project.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue is set to receive £794,872 towards Urban Search and Rescue crewing and training; £77,444 for training on Enhanced Command Support Units and a further £70,529 towards High Volume Pump training.

Funding is also being provided protective equipment, search dog teams and associated training equipment and facilities.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager (Civil Protection), Pete Crook, said:

“Emergency services are facing an increased variety of demanding situations. Major incidents caused by natural disasters, industrial accidents and the threat of terror attacks are challenges that we need to prepare for at a national level.

“The New Dimension programme provides this capability with a range of equipment, people and training that allows us to respond effectively to catastrophic events of various types.

“Hampshire has attracted the whole range of New Dimension assets that not only respond nationally whenever needed but also enhance response within Hampshire.”
