Doors'n'Fires

Fire is HOT. We know that from what we have learnt so far. But did you know that fire can heat things it's not even touching?

Well, it can. The heat that flames give off can also heat up things near them. The smoke from flames can also be hot and heat other things up.

This means that if you are in a building where there is a fire in another room, you need to be very careful about opening doors and finding the best way out.

We use something called the 'Door Procedure' to check that doors are safe to open before going into a room.

  • Feel the door with the back of your hand - if it is hot, DO NOT open it.

  • Test the door handle is not hot - metal conducts heat quicker than wood.

  • If the door and handle are not hot, the door may be safe to open.

  • Always stick low to the floor to keep clear of smoke.

If You Get Trapped:

  • Close the door

  • Seal cracks

  • Open the windows if safe

  • Signal for help and phone 999

  • Don't Jump - Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service will reach you.
