If we have visited your school lately, you will have 'learned not to burn'.
One of the best things you can do to prepare for a fire is to make your own fire escape plan. A fire can be frightening, but if you have made your plan, you can get out safely.
Our 5 step guide to help you make and follow your family's home escape plan:
| Step |
Action |
Draw a map of your home and mark the best way out. If there are other ways show them as well. Make the map as clear as possible, so that everyone in you family can understand it.
Talk to everyone else in your home about your plan and decide the best ways to escape a fire.
If you hear the smoke alarm, follow your escape plan and get out immediately. Remember - "Get Out, Get the Fire Service Out and Stay Out"
Never try to hide from a fire in a cupboard or under a bed, and don't try and go back for any toys or pets.
Remember, you can help to stop fires starting too. Don't play with matches or lighters. Don't leave toys or clothes near to fires or heaters. Play it safe - switch electrical things off at the wall socket when you're not using them.

Some of the schools we have visited have already made their home escape plans.
Have a look at a few of them to help you get started.
