Development Programmes – Crew to Area Manager

Introduction

All Grey Book staff on substantive promotion to a higher role will be placed on a Development Programme.

Individual Development is divided into two distinct phases; the Acquisition phase – gaining knowledge and skills to carry out the new role effectively and the Application phase - where an individual must demonstrate that they can carry out the new role with the knowledge and skills gained in the acquisition stage.

Acquisition

Individuals will  be nominated to attend specific Development Input Modules relevant to their role to provide them with the right management ‘tools’.

Supervisory Managers will either attend a day release programme or follow a distance learning package, covering management styles and techniques, health and safety etc.  Individuals will  be nominated to attend specific Development Input Modules relevant to their role to provide them with the right management ‘tools’.

Crew Managers will receive Incident Command training and must pass an assessment utilising the Vector simulator to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ICS.  They will also be nominated for the Crew Managers Managing Incident course (CMMI) at Service Headquarters Training Centre.  Further management development courses are identified for the roles of Watch to Group Manager, these include Certificate and Diplomas in Management Studies, MBA plus specific operational inputs relevant to role.

Application

The Development Programme is directly related to the role in which a person works.  It is a method of ensuring that sufficient evidence, based on workplace performance is gathered to allow them to claim competent status.

On promotion individuals are inducted onto their Development Programme and will have a nominal 18 months to complete the Development Programme Record.  An initial 3-month review is also held to ensure that the quality of work produced and the support provided by Line Managers/Assessors is to the right standard

The individual’s Line Manager and Quality Assurance Officer will make written records of the progress made in their new job and comment on the gathering of workplace based evidence.  The Development Programme Record is finally internally verified by the Training Audit and Development Manager as a further level of Quality Assurance.
